Kicks were introduced on the second day when the students are reasonably fluent with their hand attacks and defences. First they practiced a typical kicking attack, “Happy Bird Hops up Branch”, and its counter, “Lohan Strikes Drum”. Then they applied the kicking attack in their sequence sparring whenever they found it appropriate. Hence the sparring movements were not pre-arranged, but the students were limited to defined conditions, which in this case were to use only hand attacks but supplemented with kicks when appropriate, and to respond accordingly. This video clip shows their early attempts. It also shows a common mistake made in their footwork although their attacking and countering patterns were correct.
The size of the video clip is 4.96 mb.
