Traveling Dragon Spear – Part 3

USNING THE SPEAR AGAINST THE BUTERFLY KNIVES AND THE BIG KNIFE

Traveling Dragon Spear

How would you use a spear to handle an opponent using a pair of Butterfly Knives?

How would you defend against an opponent using a pair of Butterfly Knives or a Big Knife? Today, many people learn only the outward forms of the spear without understanding their combat application. Hence they would not be able to defend themselves against the Butterfly Knives, the Big Knife or other weapons.

A skillful exponent with Butterfly Knives can be very formidable, as the participants have found out from their direct experience. On the other hand, a Big Knife has the advantage of both length and weight.

Besides other techniques, circling and shooting are very effective techniques of the spear against the Butterfly Knives and the Big Knife. Do you know how these techniques are used?

“Traveling Incorrect Way of Holding a Big Knife

A Big Knife, like the one shown in the video clip, is often used against a spear. Grandmaster Wong explains that many practitioners grip the shaft of the Big Knife at the blade. This is incorrect as it negates the length-advantage of the Big Knife. One might well hold a saber instead. The grip should be at the lower hand of the shaft so as to gain advantage of the long weapon.
