Traveling Dragon Spear – Part 1

INTRODUCING THE TRAVELING DRAGON THIRTEEN-TECHNIQUE SPEAR

Traveling Dragon Spear

The spear shoot is considered in kungfu circles to be the most formidable technique of all weapons because it is technically the most difficult technique to counter.

There are two main types of spears, namely the metal spears and the flower spears. The metal spears were long and heavy, with the spear shaft usually made of heavy wood or metal. They were usually used for horseback fighting, and were the choice weapons of Chinese generals in the past.

The flower spears are a modern version of the classical metal spears. Flower spears are light and shorter than metal spears, with the spear shaft usually made of light wood or cane. Flower spears are usually used for foot fighting.

Grandmaster Wong has three spear sets – a metal spear set called “Cross-road Throat-Locking Spear” from Uncle Righteousness, and two flower spear sets called “Traveling Dragon Spear” from his Sisook Shen Phooi of Uncle Righteousness’ lineage, and “Thirteen-Technique Spear” from Sifu Choe Hoong Choy of Wing Choon. The set presented here is a composite set from “Traveling Dragon Spear” and “Thirteen-Technique Spear”, with some patterns from “Cross-road Throat-Locking Spear”.

Grandmaster Wong explains that a spear shoot is considered in kungfu circles as the most formidable weapon technique because it is technically the most difficult to counter. As a spear is light and therefore can be pulled back easily, a spear shoot is like a bullet shot from a gun.

There are two main different types of spears today, namely the metal spear and the flower spear. The metal spear is so called because its shaft is usually made of metal. It is heavy and long, and was used on horseback in the past. The flower spear is short and light. Its shaft is usually made of light wood, and today is usually used on foot.

“Traveling Difference in Holding a Metal Spear and a Flower Spear

Grandmaster Wong shows the typical difference in holding a metal spear and a flower spear. A flower spear being light is held with hands holding the spear at the end of the shaft, usually with the left hand in front.
