Traveling Dragon Spear – Part 16

COVERING THE FOUR CORNERS AGAINST ALL ATTACKS

Traveling Dragon Spear

Grandmaster Wong performing the pattern "General Wavs Flag"

There are two main ways to classify weapon attacks – coming from four directions, and coming at three levels.

From the four directions, weapon attacks may come from the top left, top right, bottom left and bottom right. From the three levels, weapon attacks may aimed at your top, middle or bottom.

Covering the four corners will enable you to handle all types of weapon attacks regardless of whether the attacks come from any of the four directions or three levels. These four corners are covered by the four techniques of “yew”, “thiew”, “sou” and “phut”, which are “wave”, “flick”, “sweep” and “brush”. If you are holding your spear with your left hand in front, these techniques move an opponent’s weapon to the top right, top left, bottom right and bottom left respectively.
