Traveling Dragon Spear – Part 9

THE SHOOT -- THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE AND MOST DEADLY OF SPEAR TECHNIQUES

Traveling Dragon Spear

The spear shoot is regarded by many as the most difficult technique to counter

The shoot is the most representative as well as the most deadly technique of the spear. It is regarded by many as technically the most difficult to counter. Therefore, no one would be considered competent in his chosen weapon until he knows and is able to counter a spear shoot.

Many types of shoots are shown in this video series. They include shooting the spear from the centre, from the left, from the right, with feet together, and with one hand. The deadly “return horse shoot” is demonstrated. The importance of skills and tactics in the application of the shoot is also discussed.

“Traveling Importance of Skills over Techniques

The next pattern, “Bend Body Pierce Tiger”, is very subtle. But its successful application depends much on good timing and agile footwork. Without these two skills, this highly effective technique may be a liability. This shows the importance of skills over techniques.

“Traveling Variation of Footwork according to Situations

But good footwork is not rigid. The footwork for the pattern “Bend Body Pierce Tiger” may vary according to different situations. The footwork shown in this video clip, for example, is slightly different from that shown in the previous video clip, but the principle is the same. The other pattern “Reversed Bending Piece Tiger” completes the yin-yang aspect of “Bend Body Pierce Tiger”.

“Traveling Good Timing and Good Spacing

Grandmaster Wong demonstrates the combat application of “Bend Body Pierce Tiger” and “Reversed Bending Pierce Tiger”. As it can be seen in the video, good timing and good spacing are essential for a successful application of these deadly techniques, otherwise they become a liability instead.

“Traveling Various Ways of Shooting the Spear

Various ways of shooting the spear are practiced in the patterns following. They include shooting the spear from the left, from the right, from the centre, with both feet together, and with one hand. Circling the spear before shooting is also important.

“Traveling Six Harmonies in Spear Shoot
