INVESTIGATING THE COMBAT APPLICATIONS OF SOME PATTERNS
How would you Apply this Single Tiger from Uncle Righteousness' Lineage?

Shaolin Kung Fu

Sifu Anthony Korahais demonstrating an application of "Horse-Riding Hand Sweep" on Eugene Butterworth

There is at least one combat application for every kungfu pattern. But most kungfu practitioners today do not know the combat applications of the kungfu patterns they practice.

The video series shows participants forwarding patterns that they are unsure of their combat functions. Three patterns are shown here” “Single Tiger Emerges from Cave”, “Horse-Riding Hand Sweep” and “Lohan Emerges from Cave”.

The pattern “Single Tiger Emerges from Cave” shown here is from the classica Tiger-Crane Set of Uncle Righteousness’ lineage. It is slightly different from the one we normally perform.

“Shaolin Single Tiger Emerges from Cave

It is interesting to note that the pattern “Single Tiger Emerges from Cave” found in the Tiger-Crane Set which Grandmaster Wong learned from Uncle Righteousness, is quite different from our “Single Tiger Emerges from Cave”. Here, Sifu Eugene shows an application of this special “Single Tiger” pattern.

“Shaolin Front-Arrow Stance

Molly suggests that this special “Single Tiger Emerges from Cave” can be used to counter against an opponent holding you from behind. Grandmaster Wong improves on Molly’s application, including striking the opponent’s leg with his leg, thus explaining a combat function of the “Front-Arrow Stance” of this pattern.

“Shaolin Horse-Riding Hand Sweep

Eugene Butterworth asks about the combat application of “Horse-Riding Hand Sweep” found in his Dragon-Tiger Set. Grandmaster Wong asks him in return to think of some applications. Eugene demonstrates that when an opponent sweeps his leg from behind, “Horse-Riding Hand Sweep” (with a jump) would be a good counter.

“Shaolin Lohan Emerges from Cave

Andy performs the pattern “Lohan Emerges from Cave”, and asks how it can be used in combat. Lohan Kungfu is the prototype of Shaolin Kungfu. This Lohan pattern is highly combat effective if one knows how to use it. Grandmaster Wong invites others to offer their suggestions.

“Shaolin Counter-Striking as Opponent Punches

Steve suggests an application of the pattern “Lohan Emerges from Cave”. As an opponent attacks with a thrust punch, brush away his attack and counter-strike with a upward cannon punch. Acting on Grandmaster Wong’s comment that the opponent’s hand may pose a danger, Steve grips it as he counter-strikes.

“Shaolin Counter-Striking from a Side

Grandmaster Wong improves on Steve’s response. Instead of counter-striking face to face, Grandmaster Wong moves to the opponent’s side. This gives better control over the opponent as well as avoids his possible counters.
The size of the video clip is 0.80 mb.
