How to Think and Act as a Master
Review of the Special Shaolin Kungfu Course of 16th to 22nd April 2007 – Part 56

FROM THE LEVEL OF TECHNIQUES TO THE LEVELS OF TACTICS AND STRATEGIES
Frustrating your Opponent Before he Moves or Overcoming him During his Movements

Shaolin Kung Fu

When an Opponent thinks he has Subdued you, with a Simple Turn your Reverse the Situation

In many ways kungfu combat is like playing chess. At the basic level, when your opponent makes a good move, you counter with a better move. At a higher level, you frustrate your opponent’s intention even before he makes his planned moves. Or you allow him to make his planned moves but overcome him as he does so.

Of course you need to plan many moves ahead of your opponent. The planning is usually done not during combat but before combat begins, and you have practiced your planned moves many times until you are very skillful at them. This brings kungfu combat from the level of techniques to the levels of tactics and strategies.

Two secret tactics are revealed here, “lead hand” and “false-false, real-real”. When you apply “leak hand” you may defeat your opponent often without him realizing what has happened. When you apply “false-false, real-real”, your opponent may not know which attacks are false and which are real. But if your opponent applies them on you, what would you do? You can play chess. You can frustrate him before he makes his move, or allow him to carry on but overcome him in his process.

“Shaolin Tiger-Tail Hand and Tiger-Claw

If your arm is being gripped, you can release the grip and counter-strike, often with the opponent not realizing the counter-attack, using “Leak Hand Tiger Tail”. Make sure that you close your opponent well as you move in to attack. If you are so attacked, you can reverse the situation using “Single Tiger Emerges from Cave”.

“Shaolin Simple Movement Profound Application

The movement of “Leak Hand Cannon Punch” is simple but its application profound. Notice that Grandmaster Wong and Steve counter each other using “Leak Hand Cannon Punch”. Good footwork is very important. Notice also how Grandmaster Wong intercepts Steve’s cannon punch, making it impossible for Steve to attack.

“Shaolin Leak in to Attack despite Good Counter

Here is another beautiful move in kungfu, like in chess. Grandmaster Wong intends to move in to strike Steve with “Leak Hand Tiger Tail”. Steve attempts to cover Grandmaster Wong’s Tiger-Tail Hand and strike Grandmaster Wong. But Grandmaster “leaks” in and strike Steve with “Leak Hand Tiger Tail” as planned, despite Steve’s otherwise good counter.

“Shaolin The Yin Side and the Yang Side

Grandmaster Wong illustrates a subtle difference in circulating his hand to release a wrist grip. In the first move, his hand is at the “yin” side of, or “inside”, the opponent’s hand. So when he strikes the opponent, he has to guard the opponent’s hand to prevent him from counter-striking. In the second move, Grandmaster Wong’s hand is at the “yang” side of, or “outside”, the opponent’s hand. The movement of his strike itself prevents the opponent from counter-striking.
