HOW TO RAISE YOUR COMBAT TO HIGHER LEVELS
Improving Combat Efficiency with the Five-Animal Combat Sequence
The Five-Animal Set offers a great variety of techniques for combat
How would you raise your level of combat? The video clips here show how you can do so in at least three ways.
Firstly, you can use more sophisticated techniques for attack as well as defence. For example, instead of using a typical punch, you can use a dragon-hand strike to an opponent’s neck.
Secondly you can use higher level tactics. Instead of first defending then countering, you may use defence cum counter or no defence direct counter. For example, when an opponent attacks you, you cover his attack and simultaneously counter-attack.
Thirdly, you can raise your combat level by enhancing your footwork. Good footwork makes your attack more effective, as well as makes it more difficult for your opponent to defend or counter-attack.

A Good Variety of Patterns
Chris and Nick Kryder go over their combat sequence derived from the Shaolin Five-Animal Set. At first they perform slowly, pausing after each pattern. Grandmaster Wong tells them that at this first stage they do not need to pause for comments but perform the sequence smoothly at normal speed so as to have a general view of the sequence. Their sequence is made up of a good variety of patterns.

Tactic of Defence cum Counter
Now they pause at each pattern for deeper analysis. Chris “swallows” to avoid Nick’s initial attack and counters with a dragon-hand. Grandmaster Wong says that Nick’s attacking hand is still too close for safety. Chris should push it away or guard against it. Nick covers Chris’ dragon-hand and simultaneously counter with “Hungry Tiger Catches Goat”, using the tactic of “defence cum counter”.

Secret Mechanics of the Crane Beak
Chris deflects Nick’s tiger-claw attack and counters with a palm strike (not shown in the video). Nick moves to a side and counters with a crane beak, using the pattern “Reincarnated Satisfied Crane”, using the tactic of “no defence direct counter”. Grandmaster Wong explains the secret mechanics of the crane beak which is unknown to many people performing this crane pattern.

Higher Levels of Combat Tactics
Have you noticed that Chris and Nick are using high level tactics in the combat? Most people would first defend then counter. This is also the main tactic we use in our basic combat sequences. But here Chris and Nick have discarded with “first defend the counter” and use “defence cum counter” or “no defence direct counter”. For example, Chris does not block or even deflect Nick’s crane-beak attack, but directly counter with a leopard punch.

Improving Combat with Better Footwork
When Nick attacks, Chris counters with a dragon-hand straight-away. This is a high level tactic. Grandmaster improves it further by using better footwork. The improved counter-attack is not only faster but also safer for the exponent.
The size of the video clip is 0.93 mb.
