BASIC COUNTERS AGAINST A BOXER'S JABS

Shaolin Kung Fu

Using footwork and taming hand, you can "close" a Boxer and strike him

A Boxer’s jabs are very fast. How do you counter them?

We may take a Boxer’s jabs like “Black Tiger Steals Heart” and respond with “Single Tiger Emerges from Cave”. While this is feasible, it is not a good choice. Not only we have to compete with the Boxer’s force as he jabs in, we also have to compete with his speed, which is generally faster than the Single Tiger response in real time.

A better choice is to brush away his jabs using the Shaolin pattern “Kitten Washes Face”. Here we compensate the Boxer’s faster speed in real time with our better technique. We also minimize his force because our respond follows his attacking momentum instead of going against it.

An even better response is to use “Wave Dragon Back to Cave”. Here we not only brush away his attack but “tame” or cover it as well, making it difficult for him to continue attacking. We can then counter-attack with our “Black Tiger Steals Heart”.

“Shaolin Wave Dragon Back to Cave

Grandmaster Wong shows an improvement in responding to a Boxer’s jabs. Instead of merely brushing away his jabs with “Kitten Watches Face”, you also “tame” his attacking hand using the pattern “Wave Dragon Back to Cave” before counter-striking with a Black Tiger.

“Shaolin Taming a Boxer’s Jabs

A good Boxer, however, would bounce back when you tame his hand, and bounce back with another jab. You tame his jabs and counter-strike with Black Tigers. This sequence is like our basic Combat Sequence 1 except that you use “Wave Dragon Back to Cave” instead of “Single Tiger Emerges from Cave”.

“Shaolin Modification of Basic Combat Sequence 1

Tim applies this basic strategy in fighting against a Boxer. Whenever he jabs with his right hand, tame his jab with “Wave Dragon Back to Cave” and counter-strike with “Black Tiger Steals Heart”. But what should you do if he jabs with his left hand? This will come later. Now we just handle this common situation of a Boxer jabbing with right hand. This is a modification of our basic Combat Sequence 1.

“Shaolin Shifting Body Instead of Moving Feet

Here is a further improvement. Instead of shifting back the front leg into a False-Leg Stance, you can just shift your body without moving your feet when you tame the Boxer’s jabs. Then you shift you body forward again for the counter-strike. All these are performed in one smooth movement instead of two separate movements.

“Shaolin The Taming Hand of a Military God of Wealth

Here is more improvement. Instead of just covering the opponent’s hand, you “close” your opponent by pressing in, thus making him unable to move forward to attack you. This technique is known as “taming hand” and the pattern here is called “Yun Tan Tames Tiger”. (“Yun Tan is a military god of wealth.)

“Shaolin Pressing in with Taming Hand

Tim now applies the new technique taught by Grandmaster Wong. He presses in with a “taming hand” and strikes the Boxer, who is quite helpless. Grandmaster Wong remarks that he should not merely drum on the opponent, but strike him forceful (stopping an inch or two from target when training with a partner).
